IT'S ABOUT
TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR NURSING HOME ABUSE AND NEGLECT
Tens of thousands
of our elderly loved ones are abused or neglected every day in
nursing homes across America. Nursing home abuse has reached an
epidemic level, and it may be the worst systemic violation of
basic human rights occurring in our nation today.
Mistreatment in a nursing home can occur in a number of forms.
It sometimes occurs through nursing malpractice, for example where
a resident dies from sepsis because nurses failed to detect and
treat a decubitus ulcer. It sometimes occurs in the form of physical
abuse, such as beatings, rape, or sexual assault. Emotional mistreatment
and neglect of a resident also constitute unlawful mistreatment.
Family members of a nursing home resident should watch diligently
for any signs of abuse, neglect, or substandard care. Visits should
be frequent and unannounced, and observations compared between
visits. A designated family member should ask questions of the
nursing staff about how the resident is doing. Alarm bells should
sound if a caregiver responds defensively, indifferently, or otherwise
suspiciously to reasonable questions. Be attentive to conflicting
stories from your loved one and the caregiver.
Some helpful websites that discuss identifying elder abuse include
the National
Center on Elder Abuse website, and AARP's page on Avoiding
Abuse.
